All of summer
in a day

An experimental typographic redesign of the short story All of Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury. The story is of a girl from earth named Margot living on a distant, rainy planet that only experiences summer for one day every 7 years. The other children feel jealousy towards Margot for having seen the sun before, so they lock her in a closet before the sun comes out.

Returning to the beginning of the book, we saw how the interior uses black and white and imagery of water/ink to represent emotional moments and setting (a dark closet, a movement through a classroom, a look out a rainy window, etc.) The front and back of the book are black with subtle raindrops. It felt appropriate for Margot’s story. No happy illustrations or fancy typography.
Just darkness and rain. Rain, rain, rain.

As the children danced and played throughout the one day of summer, Margot’s right page remained black. This acts as a reminder of how Margot  felt in the closet. As they realized what they had done, the ink from her page bleeds onto their text. The moment they truly understand their actions and become guilty is the moment they begin to take on the ink from her side of the page.

The first piece i'm choosing to display is one of the most emotional moments in the story in my opinion. Nearing the middle of the story, the children decide that Margot should be locked in the dark for the one day of summer. Margot’s scream is what breaks the story, her words are almost being dragged into the darkness. And you see the movement and emotion as she fights back, and slowly gives up.

Margot’s typography is always right aligned or focused on the right side of the page. The left side often has more “normal” typesetting as the children behave as they usually would in the classroom. Margot is often ostracized from her classmates, so she has her own alignment and page to show her seclusion. Emotional moments are often surrounded by water-imagery, such as Margot’s poem about the sun.
